AT THE TIME OF THE REPUBLIC......
The Venetians used to wear masks not only during Carnival but also on many other occasions during the year.
Of course they wanted to disguise and conceal their appearance and they didn’t want to be recognized in particular places or occasions.
Women wore masks also for beauty: a mask of black velvet brought out the whiteness of their faces.
”Maschereri” created masks and their craft spread everywhere.
You can still buy beautiful handmade masks, everywhere in the city.
